Pune: Commuters travelling towards Mundhwa and Pune Cantonment areas from Ghorpadi can expect relief from traffic jams as the civic administration is planning to complete the ongoing work of a rail flyover at Ghorpadi in the next three months before monsoon.About 70% work of the flyover has been finished so far, the remaining work is expected to get momentum as PMC has recently received a crucial nod from the railways to operate the rail blocks to launch the girder span above the rail tracks. Most of the blocks will be scheduled during night hours to ensure minimum impact on road and rail movement. PMC officials said that they do not see any issue in completing remaining work by the end of May.Ghorpadi area has been facing a significant bottleneck for many years. Daily commuters spend a lot of time crossing the two rail tracks passing through the area owing to absence of rail over bridges or flyovers. The civic administration threw open one flyover in 2024 which reduced traffic chaos to some extent. Another flyover is expected to be ready by May.An official from PMC’s projects department said, “Work on both side ramps has reached advanced stages. We were waiting for a go-ahead from the railways. Preliminary works to launch the girder on rail tracks have been started immediately. We expect to finish the entire launching in the next two months. About 30 to 40 blocks will be taken up in phases. Biggest relief commuters will have is that they will not have to wait at the railway crossing.“Sandip Gaikwad, a local resident, said that local people are eagerly waiting for the flyover’s inauguration. He said, “People have suffered a lot owing to lack of proper roads and constant delays due to rail crossings. Waiting at the rail crossing has gone up in the last few days owing to increased train operations on both lines. There was a continuous demand to construct flyovers to eliminate stopping at the crossings.“The flyover proposal went through various technical checks owing to the defence and rail establishments in nearby areas. The PMC has introduced traffic diversions in the area since last one year to assist the work.
