Gurgaon: The state govt on Wednesday approved three infrastructure projects worth Rs 123 crore to improve the city’s water supply network and strengthen its stormwater drainage system. The projects were cleared during a meeting of the high-powered purchase committee chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. The first project, a new 22km master water supply pipeline that was conceptualised in 2023, will be laid to improve water availability in several tail-end areas that face shortages, particularly during summer. The project is estimated to cost Rs 55 crore. The pipeline will have a carrying capacity of 200 million litres per day (MLD) and will draw water from the proposed 100 MLD Basai water treatment plant-II. It will run along the Dwarka Expressway through sectors 101, 104, 108, 110 and 110A, Bajghera Road and Rezangla Chowk before crossing NH8 and connecting to the Cyber Hub-Sector 16 water supply line.Areas expected to benefit include Palam Vihar, sectors 23A, 23 and 22, HSIIDC sectors 19 and 20, Dundahera, Surya Vihar and DLF-III. Officials said the pipeline will be integrated with the existing network at four points using resilient-seated valves, allowing water diversion during repairs or maintenance. The project is expected to take around one and a half years to complete after work is allotted. The second project that the govt approved was a Rs 51 crore upgrade to the main pipeline carrying water from the Basai water treatment plant (WTP) to Sector 16 boosting station. The existing pipeline was designed to carry 170 MLD but is currently transporting nearly 200 MLD, leading to leaks and disruptions. To meet rising demand, the ageing 1,300mm pipeline will be replaced with 1,600mm and 1,800mm diameter pipelines, increasing supply capacity to 311 MLD.Under the plan, a 4.3km-long 1,800mm pipeline will be laid from Basai WTP to Umang Bharadwaj Chowk, and a 3.7km stretch of 1,600mm pipeline will be built between Hero Honda Chowk and Rajiv Chowk. In addition, an 800mm pipeline will be laid alongside the existing 1,200mm line from Rajiv Chowk to the Sector 16 boosting station, covering another 3.3km.Once completed, the pipeline network spanning about 13.35km from Basai to Sector 16 is expected to improve water supply in more than 20 sectors and colonies, including Sector 10A, Sector 37, Civil Lines and Sadar Bazar. The work will be carried out in one year, an official said. The third project involves rebuilding a 1.4km stretch of the master stormwater drain (Leg-II) between Ashok Vihar and railway culvert number 50 near Bhimgarh Kheri at a cost of Rs 17.6 crore. This section has become structurally weak over time, with parts partially collapsed, reducing its capacity to carry stormwater during heavy rainfall. Administrative approval for the project was granted in April last year, and tenders floated after that.Leg-II is an important part of the city’s drainage network. It begins in Sector 27 and flows into the Najafgarh drain, passing through areas such as sectors 29 and 41, NH 8, Atul Kataria Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Ashok Vihar, railway culvert number 50, Dharampur village and Sector 107.While most stretches of the drain have been covered, the portion in Ashok Vihar remains an open brick-lined channel. Under the new plan, it will be rebuilt as a covered reinforced concrete structure designed to handle higher stormwater flow.
