Berhampur: A 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for beating his wife to death and shooting at her suspected lover at Katapanga village in Kandhamal district on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Lili Behera (33), a mother of two children.Accused Biranchi Behera, a daily labourer, opened fire after seeing his wife with another man at Bagaramunda, about 1km from their house. In a fit of rage, he fired at them. While the man sustained injuries, his wife managed to escape. Biranchi returned home and then beat her to death. The injured person was admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Phulbani and his condition is said to be stable.Police initially suspected that the accused might have shot his wife as well, but after investigation, it was revealed that she was beaten to death.Sanjit Behera, IIC of Gochhapada, said preliminary inquiry revealed the woman was involved in an illicit affair with the injured man for the past few years. The accused had warned her in the past. Police have seized the country-made gun used in the crime.
