Kanpur: The cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday approved the four-lane bridge over the Ganga to connect Trans-Ganga city with Kanpur city.Industrial development minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi said that the bridge connecting Trans-Ganga with the city will ease commuting for around 10 lakh people facilitating the movement of locals and tourists. It will also boost economic and commercial activities in the city.An expenditure of Rs 75,313.2 lakh has been earmarked for the proposed bridge. Of this, the required fund of Rs 46,000 lakh will be provided by Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) under the Atal Infrastructure Mission, while the remaining approved amount will be borne by the authority from its own resources.Nandi said that UPSIDA is developing Trans-Ganga city at the proposed site across the Ganga river for relocating industrial units from Kanpur Nagar and surrounding areas. Currently, only one route is available for commuting via the Ganga Barrage, but after the development of Trans-Ganga City, there will be immense traffic pressure of heavy and light vehicles crossing the Ganga leading to traffic jams on the existing Ganga Barrage route. In view of this, the construction of a four-lane bridge over the Ganga will be necessary. If a four-lane bridge merges at one point in Kanpur city, there will be excessive traffic density at the merging point, which will obstruct movement. In such a situation, instead of a single four-lane bridge, it would be appropriate to construct two separate bridges of two lanes each, which will merge at different intersections in Kanpur city, thereby ensuring smooth traffic flow as well as all-round development of Unnao, Kanpur and Trans-Ganga City, said the minister.
