Kolkata: The Election Commission may appoint Subrata Gupta as special observer for the forthcoming assembly elections in Bengal.Sources said CEC Gyanesh Kumar shared this information during a meeting with the state chief secretary, DGP, and other senior govt officials on Tuesday. The commission is yet to issue a formal notification on this.Earlier, the commission had appointed Gupta, a retired IAS officer, as the ‘special roll observer’ for the Bengal SIR. exercise.The poll panel sought detailed information on the officers-in-charge and their supervising officers at police stations where incidents of post-poll violence occurred after the 2021 assembly polls and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Sources said the commission instructed Peeyush Pandey, DGP, to submit a detailed list, including any departmental investigations or disciplinary actions taken against those officers.
