Mohali: Taking suo motu notice of the alleged derogatory remarks made by Sukhpal Singh Khaira regarding the Rs 1,000 financial assistance provided to Punjab women, the State Women’s Commission has summoned the Bholath legislator, along with Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, to appear before it on Thursday.According to the commission, Khaira recently made a remark about the Rs 1,000 allowance for women that was considered disrespectful and undermining the dignity of women. The comment was reportedly made in the presence of Raja Warring, following which the commission decided to summon both leaders for an explanation.Punjab State Women’s Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill said the commission took serious note of the language used in the remark. “Suo motu notice was taken of it. The way he (Khaira) used words about women and their dignity, like ‘dancing ladies’, reflects the level of ego he carries,” she said.Gill further said not everyone was born with privilege and financial assistance held value for many women. “If Sukhpal Khaira was born with a silver spoon, others are not. Ask the women who were celebrating and dancing what the value of Rs 1,000 is for them. They have small joys they can fulfil without asking anyone for money. Khaira only understands happiness worth crores; he probably does not know the value of Rs 1,000,” she added. The chairperson also stated that the use of such language against women was unacceptable and strict action should be considered. “If we examine the kind of derogatory language used, an FIR should be filed against Khaira. I also wrote to Raja Warring to take action against such undisciplined leaders. Khaira should be expelled from the party,” Gill said. The commission asserted that derogatory language against women for political gain would not be tolerated under any circumstances.Notices were issued to both leaders through the SSP Kapurthala, directing them to appear in person at the office of the Punjab State Women’s Commission on March 12.The commission will seek Khaira’s response regarding his remarks and question Raja Warring about why he did not object to the statement at the time it was made.MSID:: 129399227 413 |
