Mumbai: A Right to Information (RTI) plea has shown that 10.8 lakh vehicles were challaned for unauthorized parking in North Mumbai between Jan 2020 and Jan 2026. Fines up to Rs 36 crore were levied. The information was obtained from the Mumbai Traffic Police department by activist Godfrey Pimenta.The data was collated by Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivali, Samta Nagar, Dindoshi and Jogeshwari traffic chowkies.
As per the RTI data, more than 13,800 challans were issued to motorists for violation of PUC norms. Drivers of 6,888 heavy vehicles were issued challans for driving in the wrong direction on the Western Express Highway. Over 4,900 motorists were issued challans for honking in silence zones, around schools, hospitals etc., in violation of norms.
