Amritsar: The officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, on Monday condemned the alleged high-handedness by the administration at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, against students associated with various Sikh-oriented student organisations, as well as the reported disrespect shown towards their turbans and articles of faith. In a release issued here on Monday, Giani Gargaj said if students objected to the event organised inside the university to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, it was the fundamental responsibility of the university administration to listen to their concerns rather than resorting to coercive measures. The jathedar said amid the controversy surrounding the programme, the Panjab University administration approached him a few days ago to help resolve the matter. Following this, he suggested a solution to the university. However, instead of adopting a serious and constructive approach, the university administration allegedly acted arbitrarily under a certain agenda. He said strict notice was taken of this conduct.Giani Gargaj further said the actions of Chandigarh Police against students, allegedly pushing them, striking Sikh students with batons, removing their turbans, and disrespecting their articles of faith (kakars), were completely unacceptable. He asked for strict action against the officials of both the university and the police who were responsible for the incident.
