Chennai: Two college students drowned while bathing in Kondangi lake near Thiruporur on Saturday.According to police, around 10 students, including Viswanath, 20, from Madurai and Bharath Kumar, 20, from Mayiladuthurai, visited Kondangi lake area on Saturday.
Around 2pm, the group entered the lake to bathe. While bathing, Viswanath and Bharath Kumar moved towards a deeper section of the lake and accidentally slipped into deep water. As they did not know how to swim, they drowned.Their friends immediately alerted Thiruporur police and fire and rescue services from Maraimalai Nagar. Rescue personnel conducted an extensive search of the lake and later recovered the bodies of the two students.The bodies were sent to the govt hospital in Chengalpet for postmortem examination. Police registered a case and are investigating.Police said Kondangi Lake is a large water body where excess rainwater usually flows out during the monsoon, creating a waterfall-like effect that attracts visitors. Due to safety concerns, police earlier imposed restrictions and deployed personnel to prevent people from entering the lake. However, security was later withdrawn after the water flow subsided.
