Srinagar, Mar 07: CPI(M) leader MLA Kulgam M. Y. Tarigami on Saturday criticised the United States and Israel over the ongoing conflict involving Iran, terming it “barbarity and genocide” and urging the Government of India to condemn the aggression and work towards stopping the war.
Addressing a press conference here, Tarigami said the developments unfolding in West Asia have become a matter of grave concern across the world. He said the ongoing conflict reflects unilateral aggression by the United States and Israel against a sovereign country and has created a dangerous and destructive situation.
He said the scale of violence and destruction witnessed in the conflict was alarming. “I do not have enough words to describe the present circumstances. To me, it is barbarity and genocide,” he said, adding that some countries and leaders were deliberately ignoring the real reasons behind the war.
Tarigami said even officials in the United States had acknowledged that the conflict was linked to Israel’s agenda. “Many people around the world had already feared that this war was launched to advance the Zionist agenda of Israel,” he said.
“There should be no confusion about this aggression unleashed by the United States and Israel against the sovereign country of Iran. Killing children, assassinating respected religious leader and targeting leaders of a sovereign nation reflect extreme brutality,” he added.
The CPI (M) leader said the resistance shown by the Iranian people in the face of the conflict would be remembered in history. He said Iran had been forced into the war to defend its sovereignty, civilisation and national existence.
Tarigami also expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Iran, claiming that hospitals and cities were being targeted and that the scale of destruction continued to grow. He added that the involvement of more global powers could further escalate the crisis.
Referring to India’s ties with Iran, he said both countries share long-standing civilisational and cultural relations and have historically supported each other during difficult times. “Our country should not remain silent. The Government of India must condemn this aggression and oppose the agenda of genocide,” he said.
He warned that if the conflict expands further, the entire West Asian region could face severe consequences. Tarigami said efforts should be made at the international level to stop the war and prevent further escalation.
The CPI (M) leader also referred to protests held in different parts of the world, including in Kashmir and Jammu, against the violence. He criticised the registration of FIRs and arrests of people who had taken out mourning processions, terming the action unnecessary.
“I demand that the Jammu and Kashmir administration withdraw the FIRs and release those who have been detained in connection with these protests,” he said.
Tarigami said the consequences of the conflict were already being felt globally, including rising oil and energy prices. He warned that prolonged conflict could impact economies and daily life in many countries.
He said India has a long history of resisting imperialism and should stand for justice and sovereignty. “We must send a clear message that we will not blindly follow the dictates of any power and that we stand for justice and peace,” he added.
