Guwahati: Officers from Jalukbari police station have arrested a couple for allegedly concealing a camera inside a soapbox and placing it in the bathroom of the girls hostel at Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).The officers said the arrested persons have been identified as Mridupawan Bora (25) from Sivasagar district and Anushree Saikia (23) from Golaghat district.
“The woman is a student at TISS and was staying in the hostel where the incident took place. We have initiated an investigation, during which we found that her boyfriend, Bora, had a mental condition that made him inclined to do such acts. Both of them had been involved in similar incidents earlier, for which we have obtained evidence,” said DCP (west) Numal Mahatta.Mahatta said Bora was arrested on Tuesday, from Nagaon district’s Kaliabor town. “He was arrested while he was travelling from Guwahati to Sivasagar,” he added.According to police, Bora and Saikia had hatched the plan to place the camera together. In Feb Bora provided her the device, which she then installed it in the bathroom. “The camera, equipped with a microprocessor, was remotely controlled via a Wi-Fi connection which was under Saikia’s control. When she activated the Wi-Fi, the camera connected to the network and could transmit footage. We found it installed in only one bathroom,” he said. The police added that the accused have been charged under relevant sections of the IT Act and for voyeurism under the BNS Act. “We have presented them before the local court, and they have been sent to police remand for four days,” a police officer from Jalukbari police station said.Interrogation is ongoing, and police are trying to determine the purpose for which these videos were recorded.
