Panchkula: A chain-snatching attempt in Sector 21 on Wednesday evening was foiled after a woman resisted the attacker, forcing him to beat a hasty retreat, leaving his jacket behind. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the location. Personnel from Sector 20 police station have initiated an investigation on the basis of a complaint.According to information received, Sector 21 resident Colonel Lokesh Sharma lodged a complaint with the Sector 21 police outpost. He stated that on March 4, at around 6.45pm, his wife, Meenashree Sharma, stepped out of the house to walk their dog in the lane outside their residence.During this time, an unidentified youth approached her from behind and attempted to snatch her gold chain. The accused was described as around 5 feet 7 inches tall, heavily built, and weighing approximately 90 to 100 kilograms. Police said the attacker allegedly lunged at the woman from behind and tried to break the chain. However, Meenashree reacted quickly and fought back, punching and kicking the accused while raising an alarm.As a result of her resistance, the accused failed to snatch the chain. During the scuffle, the woman managed to grab hold of the attacker’s black jacket. In order to escape, the accused removed it and fled, leaving it behind.Later, while checking her chain, the woman realised that the pendant had fallen onto the road during the struggle. She subsequently recovered it. Police were informed about the incident and an investigation was initiated. Officials are currently examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the accused.Preliminary footage from nearby cameras shows two youths on a motorcycle. One of them is seen standing at some distance, while the other appears to approach the woman and attempt the chain snatching.
