Bengaluru: The city traffic authorities unveiled a major plan to improve pedestrian movement. As part of a comprehensive traffic management initiative, traffic police proposed construction of 101 skywalks at key junctions.Officials also relocated 103 bus stops that were previously positioned without adequate planning to streamline public transport interfaces and reduce bottlenecks on major roads.
The traffic department identified 137 spots prone to prolonged water stagnation during rains for urgent repairs and infrastructure correction ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.GBA chief commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said, “These proposals will be included in the authority’s forthcoming budget. We are currently creating the necessary provisions for executing these projects. Waterlogging is a major concern at many spots across the city, and we are addressing this through targeted infrastructure work.”On speeding up repairs, especially ahead of monsoon rains, he said, “In areas such as Sindhoor Choultry and Yelahanka, we are using advanced pipe-pushing technology to accelerate the work on drains. We hope to see notable progress by June.”Alongside infrastructure improvements, GBA is also taking a firmer stance on environmental violations. With summer months underway, the authority announced a new reward and penalty system to discourage the burning of garbage. “We are introducing a reward of Rs 250 for citizens who identify and report individuals engaged in garbage burning. This measure is to promote community participation in maintaining a cleaner city. At the same time, we will take strict action if any of our own staff are found to be violating environmental rules.”
