Former J&K Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday strongly criticised the alleged censorship of leading Kashmir-based news organisations, questioning the government’s actions at a time when people are mourning and expressing solidarity with Iran.
In a post on X, Mehbooba said that censoring media outlets was unjustified and unacceptable.
“At a time when people are grieving and showing solidarity with Iran, why is the government censoring media voices in Kashmir?” she asked, adding that such actions undermine press freedom and democratic rights.
Mehbooba urged the authorities to immediately reverse these measures and respect the fundamental right to free expression. She also appealed to social media platforms, including Meta, Facebook and Instagram, not to “gag freedom of expression or amplify propaganda by silencing the people’s voice.”
The PDP chief further said that the Jammu and Kashmir administration must stop censoring media in the region and ensure an environment where journalists can function freely without fear or restriction.
