Srinagar, March 3, 2026; In a landmark achievement for gender equality and regional leadership, Saba Shawl has been appointed as the first Kashmiri woman officer to head the Central Jail Srinagar, marking a significant milestone in Jammu & Kashmir’s correctional administration.
IPS officer Saba Shawl, known for her exemplary service in law enforcement and commitment to reforms, assumes charge today amid celebrations from colleagues, women’s rights advocates, and the local community. Her appointment underscores the Union Territory’s push towards inclusive governance and empowering women in key security roles.
I am deeply honored to lead this vital institution and pledge to uphold justice, rehabilitation, and human dignity for all, said Shawl during her induction. Under her stewardship, the Central Jail Srinagar home to over 1,200 inmates aims to enhance vocational training, mental health support, and reintegration programs, building on recent modernization efforts.
This pioneering role comes at a time when Jammu & Kashmir has seen increased female representation in policing and administration, inspiring a new generation of Kashmiri women to break barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Shawl’s career trajectory, from her early postings in counter-insurgency to leadership in urban policing, positions her uniquely to drive transformative change.
Officials from the J&K Police and Prison Department hailed the move as a “proud moment for Kashmiriyat and Nari Shakti.”
