Guwahati: Karbi Anglong’s GI-certified fresh ginger is set to enter the London market, marking a milestone for Assam’s agriculture sector. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the ministry of commerce and industry facilitated the first export consignment of 1.2 metric tons of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger from Assam to London on Monday, in collaboration with the state agriculture department. The move is part of APEDA’s strategy to promote GI-tagged products by building direct market linkages between producer groups and buyers to expand India’s agricultural exports. Karbi Anglong ginger received its GI tag in 2015.“There was a time when farmers of Assam could not imagine that their produce would go to foreign markets. But time has changed,” said state agriculture minister Atul Bora.Assam is among India’s key ginger-producing states, with around 20,000 hectares under cultivation and annual production of nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh metric tons, supported by favourable agro-climatic conditions. APEDA said Assam’s ginger is valued internationally for its distinctive aroma, desirable fibre content, and strong pungency.Bora later posted on X that Karbi Anglong’s GI-tagged fresh ginger had set course for the international market in London, calling it a proud and historic moment for Assam’s agricultural sector.“Under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble CM Dr @himantabiswa, Assam continues to expand its agricultural footprint in international markets. This milestone reflects our govt’s commitment to strengthening farmers’ income, enhancing value addition, and building strong global market linkages for Assam’s GI-tagged products,” he added. Major ginger-producing districts in Assam include Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Nagaon, and Jorhat.APEDA had earlier supported the export of 26 metric tons of ginger from Assam. Officials said the first shipment to London underscores the state’s ability to meet international quality standards and is expected to raise the visibility of Assam ginger in other markets.
