The student approached Calcutta High Court after the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) directed him to repeat the first year and did not allow him to sit for placement with his batchmates on account of poor grades and attendance.Justice Dutt (Paul) noted the arguments of the institution that the student was given make-up exams when he failed to appear on account of his medical certificates, but despite that, his score was low. His unadjusted grade was 4.4 and his adjusted grade was 3.4, when the required grade was 4.5.On June 11 last year, the student emailed the administration stating that he could not do well in the first year because of his mental disability. The college administration replied stating that he missed exams in the academic year 2024-25. He got an ‘F’ grade in courses and was allowed to reappear, in which he got a ‘C+’.On May 13, 2025, the student emailed that he paid the acceptance fee for registration into the 62nd batch registration (which is repeating the first year). However, on June 11, 2025, he requested conditional permission for the second year. The second year classes started on June 2, 2025, and instead of attending his first year (repeated year) classes, he moved the court. The judge noted that he did not attend classes for the first year or the second year. “The student seems to be in a hurry to get a degree, without properly attending any classes at all, in spite of the doctor noting that his condition is better (controlled),” the judge noted, while also observing that some of the documents pertained to minor ailments like stomach problems and viral fever.
