Patna: A notorious criminal was arrested after being shot in the leg during a police encounter on Marine Drive under the Pirbahor police station area in Patna early Sunday. The accused, Amit Kumar, a resident of Vaishali district, is a professional sharpshooter.City SP (Central) Mamta Kalyani said a tip-off was received on Sunday morning that Kumar was present at Marine Drive and was planning to commit a serious crime. A team was constituted, and an intensive search was launched, she said.“Seeing the police team, Kumar opened fire in a bid to escape. Exercising maximum restraint and in self-defence, the officers retaliated in a controlled manner, resulting in a bullet injury to his leg. He was taken into custody and rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for treatment, where he is currently undergoing medical care,” the SP told this newspaper.A pistol was recovered from the spot following the shootout. The stretch was sealed, and forensic science laboratory (FSL) experts were called for examination. Town DSP Rajesh Ranjan, the district intelligence unit (DIU), and the special task force (STF) were also present, supervising the proceedings.According to police, Kumar has a criminal history and was wanted in multiple serious cases. On Jan 27, 2025, he had attempted to enter the Patna civil court premises to assassinate Roshan Tatiya, associated with the Subodh Singh gang. The plot was foiled after his accomplice, Piyush, was arrested at the court gate during security checks while carrying a weapon. Kumar, however, managed to escape. Piyush later revealed during interrogation that Kumar had transported him to the court on his motorcycle. He had been absconding since then.The SP said, “Kumar will be interrogated to uncover details about the gang or individual from whom he allegedly took the contract for the planned crime.”
