Mohali: In a tragic incident that highlights the lurking dangers of rainwater accumulation during the monsoon, two children drowned in a rain-filled pit in Balongi village on Wednesday evening.The victims have been identified as 11-year-old Aryan, son of Ajay Kumar, and 10-year-old Radhe, daughter of Anurag. Both families hail from Uttar Pradesh.According to local residents, the children had gone to play and bathe in a patch of accumulated rainwater near their homes. However, they ventured into a deep section of the pit and tragically drowned.Passersby who witnessed the incident rushed the children to the district hospital in Phase 6, Mohali. Aryan was declared brought dead, while Radhe also succumbed shortly after arrival.A police team from Balongi station later launched an investigation. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and legal proceedings are underway.Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu confirmed the incident and said, “We are still investigating the matter after receiving information from the civil hospital. Preliminary findings suggest the children were playing in a waterlogged area when they drowned. Their bodies have been placed in the mortuary.”The police have urged parents and guardians to exercise extreme caution and prevent children from going near rainwater pits, open drains, or other hazardous water-accumulated areas during the rainy season.
