Ahmedabad: Union minister for railways, information and broadcasting, and electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday reviewed the site of the proposed Vatva Mega Coaching Terminal in the city. The upcoming facility will add six new platforms, taking the total to nine.Once commissioned, the terminal is expected to support primary maintenance of 36 train pairs daily, offer platform return facilities for 15 trains, and handle operations of 51 trains. This is projected to nearly triple the Ahmedabad division’s operational capacity. Officials said the terminal will stretch across roughly 3km and include 12 pit lines for primary maintenance. It will also feature 29 stabling lines for rake parking, two washing lines for coach cleaning, and two 600-metre sick lines for repairing defective coaches. Envisioned as a key Indian Railways infrastructure project, the terminal is expected to ease the growing operational load on Ahmedabad Junction and enable safer, more efficient and modern train handling. Vaishnaw instructed officials to assess the possibility of increasing the number of pit lines and stabling lines to meet future operational demands.
