Amravati: About 1,016 persons have been charged with submitting fake documents to obtain birth certificates in Amravati. Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya has alleged that many of these individuals are either Bangladeshi nationals or ineligible. The issue came to light after Somaiya obtained information under the Right to Information Act.The Amravati tehsildar’s office had issued orders for delayed birth registrations in 2025 and 2026, leading to the distribution of certificates. However, complaints of irregularities prompted a joint inquiry by revenue, police, and municipal authorities which revealed that 1,016 applicants had submitted fake documents, including forged papers and false evidence. The administration has ordered FIRs against these individuals and initiated the process of cancelling their birth certificates.Somaiya has termed the incident as a serious case of fraud, sparking debate about potential complicity of revenue officials.
