Pune: A two-year-old boy died, along with his mother and the latter’s grandmother, barely hours after his birthday celebrations in a road accident at Dalaj in Indapur taluka on the Solapur highway, about 110km from the city, on Thursday evening.The van they were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck after one of its tyres flattened. Three other members of the family suffered injuries. The Bhigwan police identified the deceased as Aditi Hatekar (25), her son Jay (2), both of Sangola in Solapur district, and Aditi’s grandmother Sakhubai Gejage (72), of Patas in Daund taluka. Gejage’s son Kabirdas (50), his wife Swati (34) and their daughter Samruddhi (10 months) suffered injuries in the accident. Gejage was an ex-serviceman, the police said.An officer from the Pune Rural police said the Gejage family members, hailing from Patas in Daund taluka of Pune district, had gone to Sangola in Solapur district in the morning to celebrate Jay’s birthday on Thursday. After the boy’s birthday celebrations, the Gejage family started for Patas. Jay and his mother joined them, the officer said.Sub-inspector Amit Patil of the Bhigwan police said the van they were travelling in crashed into a truck, parked along the Pune-Solapur highway, after one of its tyres developed a leak at Dalaj around 5pm. “Jay, her mother and the latter’s grandmother were killed on the spot,” he said.Patil said the residents of the area took the injured trio to a nearby hospital. “We have registered a case of accidental death. Our investigations are on,” he said.
