Nagpur: The festering crisis in Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) solid waste management (SWM) system spilled dramatically onto the streets on Thursday, as former BJP corporator Omprakash (Munna) Yadav dumped heaps of uncollected garbage inside the Laxmi Nagar zone office, accusing officials of gross negligence and a deep-rooted attendance scam.First-time Congress corporator Shailesh Pande from prabhag 11 had adopted a contrasting approach — donning the uniform of a sanitary worker to register a silent protest against erratic road sweeping in his ward during the recently held special general body meeting.Yadav claimed he repeatedly raised complaints with the SWM dept after the civic body came under administrator rule, but officials allegedly ignored them. “For the last 4 years, officials have developed an indifferent attitude. Chokage issues increased manifold. Sanitary workers mark attendance and go home without doing any work. There is zero monitoring,” he alleged.Levelling serious charges, Yadav claimed a “huge scam” in attendance records. According to him, some sanitary workers allegedly pay bribes to their seniors in zonal offices to skip duties while marking presence. “There is no proper mechanism to lift garbage. I even saw a sanitary inspector and workers enjoying tea at a roadside shop during duty hours. That’s when I asked residents of my prabhag to collect the unlifted waste and dump it at the zone office so officials understand the ground reality,” he told TOI.Ironically, Yadav himself served two terms as corporator, and his wife, Tara alias Laxmi, is the sitting corporator from prabhag 16.
