Jaipur: The three day IHPBA 2026 international conference of liver and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons began in Jaipur Thursday, drawing hundreds of experts from India and abroad. Hosted under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Technology, along with the 2nd Liver Summit, the conference will focus on latest advances in liver and HPB surgery and transplantation, said Conference Chairman Dr Naimish N Mehta.
Birmingham-based liver transplant surgeon Dr Darius Mirza pointed out in his keynote scientific address that liver transplantation should be accessible to all. He said India’s cadaver organ donation rates remain far lower than England’s, where about 90% of liver transplants are cadaveric. Mirza said that delayed diagnosis and late referral in India often prevent timely transplantation, increasing surgical complexity and reducing success rates while earlier detection pathways like those in England improve outcomes. He also cited ongoing research in genomic organ transplantation and urged stronger financial support from govt, corporates, and social organisations.
