BENGALURU: In a case of alleged medical negligence, the fingertip of a 6-month-old boy was severed during the removal of IV cannula at Chinmaya Mission Hospital in Indiranagar Tuesday, according to a complaint filed at Indiranagar police station. The baby’s mother, Priyadarshini, said she and her husband, Vijay Kumar, had brought their baby to the hospital on Feb 19 as he was suffering from cough and congestion. “We admitted the baby to the hospital as per medical advice. On Tuesday, the hospital said they were going to discharge the baby, and I settled all the bills. A medicine was administered to the baby, and then a nurse came to remove the cannula and the dressing with scissors. That is when my baby’s finger got cut and the tip fell down,” said the mother, with tears in her eyes. She alleged that when she checked with hospital staff about what to do about the injury, they kept saying the skin would grow back. The baby’s father, Vijay Kumar, lodged a police complaint and, based on that, an FIR was lodged against three hospital staffers.A senior police officer said they have registered a criminal case against the nurse who treated the child and against whom the complaint was made.According to police, the tip has been reattached to the baby’s finger. However, they’ll know if the procedure has been successful only after 15 days. For now, the baby is in the same hospital undergoing treatment for his finger.TOI made multiple attempts to speak to medical officers at Chinmaya Mission Hospital, but there was no response.
