Coimbatore: Organs harvested from a brain dead eight-year-old girl in the city have offered seven people a new lease on life.The girl, whose identity isn’t revealed, suddenly fell unconscious and collapsed at her school on Feb 23 and was rushed to a private hospital at Race Course. The girl, daughter of a Coimbatore city corporation councillor, was later shifted to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital. “It was diagnosed that the girl had suffered high blood pressure and brain hemorrhage. Despite providing specialised treatment, the girl didn’t respond much and was declared brain dead on Wednesday. The girl’s family came forward to donate her organs,” an official source said. Following this, a team led by multi-organ transplant surgeons harvested the girl’s liver, kidneys, eyes, bone and skin in accordance with the regulations prescribed by the Transplant Authority, Govt of Tamil Nadu, and were transplanted to seven recipients in other private hospitals in the city. City mayor R Ranganayaki, in an official statement, expressed condolences to the girl’s family and appreciated their decision to donate organs. “In this irreparable loss, the decision to donate your daughter’s organs has elevated you not just as parents but as mentors of the community… This sacrifice of your family will always be remembered with gratitude,” she said.
