He made the statement after meeting chief minister Pramod Sawant on Monday evening.Villagers raised objections to the proposed project a day earlier, stating that it would destroy an age-old crematorium site.“We met with CM and we told him that the ghat aarti project cannot come up in the area, and got the project scrapped,” said Phaldesai after his meeting with Sawant.Villagers of Naroa, Akhada, Diwar, and Vanshi said the land holds deep religious and cultural significance and must remain undisturbed.“We are all in favour of development and projects for the benefit of the people, but our right to safeguard our tradition that was passed down by our ancestors since generations should be protected. Our crematorium should stay unaffected,” said a protestor. The proposed Ganga Aarti Ghat project was developed by Goa Tourism Development Corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, and was part of the state govt’s push for spiritual tourism.
