Within a week of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcing its decision to ‘pause and reflect’ on the process of electing future Olympic hosts, an Indian delegation visited the IOC headquarters in Lausanne for a ‘continuous dialogue’ and proposed Amdavad, the Gujarati version for the city of Ahmedabad, as a potential host of the mega event.
India, which is keen to organise the 2036 Olympics, had not informed the IOC about any possible host city when it expressed its interest in November last.
The delegation, led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P.T. Usha, explored the opportunity and feasibility and “gained invaluable insights” regarding the requirements for bidding and hosting the Olympic Games.
Ahmedabad is also in the race to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
