Dumka: A 17-year-old girl died under mysterious circumstances at a remand home in Deoghar on Friday. She was found hanging in the bathroom. Her family members, however, claimed that it was not suicide and accused the home’s authorities of murder, raising doubts against the district administration in terms of management of the facility. The incident sparked widespread debate over administrative negligence.According to reports, the girl was sent to the Deoghar remand home from her maternal uncle’s home in Mahagama in 2024 over an alleged love affair dispute and has been under administrative supervision since then.Police arrived at the crime scene upon receiving an alert, took custody of the body, sent it for post-mortem with the Deoghar sadar hospital, and interrogated the remand home staff. A probe is also underway into the prevailing security arrangements, surveillance systems, and the role of personnel on duty.Levelling serious charges against the district administration, the victim’s father insisted, “My daughter was murdered.” He demanded a fair, high-level investigation, emphasising that since the girl was in administrative custody, the administration should bear full responsibility for her safety. However, Deoghar SP Saurabh told TOI, “The death of the remand home inmate prima facie appears to be death by suicide.” He also said that an investigation into the case was underway and would probe all possible angles. He also informed that since the victim’s family members considered the victim’s death to be murder, the probe would also touch upon the issue.Meanwhile, the post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain the cause of the girl’s death.
