Meerut: An SUV speeding at nearly 100kmph hit at least three motorcycles along the way causing panic and mayhem among commuters and passersby on a 20km road stretch in UP’s Badaun district on Sunday evening, leaving three dead and critically injuring two others.According to witnesses, it all started around 5pm near the congested Bahedi Mod in Civil Lines area of Badaun and went on for almost 30 minutes as the vehicle sped from one intersection to another on the state highway between Badaun city and Bareilly. The SUV was white in colour, a local said, adding it first hit a motorcycle, killing Mukesh, 25, of Bareilly’s Kartauli village, on the spot and injuring his brother-in-law, Madanlal, 50, a resident of Badaun’s Bilsi area.“We were travelling on our bike when the SUV at high speed all of a sudden struck our two-wheeler. The impact of the hit was so strong that we collided with another two-wheeler. My brother-in-law died on the spot, and I suffered injuries. Despite people asking it to stop, the driver sped away,” said Madanlal.Minutes later outside the city area on the state highway, the ‘killer’ SUV ran over a 20-year-old man, Vishal Singh, after knocking him down from his bike. He succumbed to his injuries soon after.“It seemed the SUV driver, in a bid to flee from a prior incident in the city area, had changed routes and took the state highway. The vehicle was speeding between 90 and 100kmph… It was scary,” a local said.At Roshan Nagar turn, also in Badaun, another motorcycle was hit by purportedly the same SUV, killing 55-year-old Badlu and seriously injuring his friend, Shan Mohammad.Police said that they are now checking all the CCTV footage along the 20-30km road stretch to identify and nab the absconding driver.(Inputs from Asif Ansari in Bareilly)
