Kanpur: A 29-year-old woman working as a junior technician at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur was found hanging at the institute’s campus, police said on Saturday. The deceased, a native of East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, had been working at IIT-Kanpur for the past three years and was residing in official accommodation on the campus. Police said preliminary investigation suggested suicide, though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained. The woman was reportedly engaged. A forensic team collected evidence while police also seized her mobile phone and a diary from the room. A letter written on paper, found torn into pieces, was also recovered. The room has been sealed for further investigation. The body has been sent to the mortuary, and postmortem will be conducted after the arrival of family members. Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur issued an official statement expressing grief over the incident. The institute said it is cooperating fully with the police and forensic teams and has extended condolences and support to the bereaved family. Police said further action will be taken based on post-mortem and forensic findings.
