Coimbatore: The city corporation is planning to establish an open-air paralympics stadium at Jeeva Nagar in ward 33 at Kavundampalayam at an estimated cost of Rs10 crore. The proposed facility and the paralympic indoor stadium under construction would be under the same roof.The city corporation commissioner said they were now working on the detailed project report. “The open-air stadium will help para-athletes with practicing sessions. Moreover, sports like javelin throw, disc throw and shot put could be conducted in the stadium.” The corporation has commenced construction of the indoor stadium on 1.10 acres in the same locality at a cost of Rs9.90 crore. The open-air stadium is planned adjacent to the indoor stadium on less than an acre. According to a senior corporation official, the open-air stadium would also be built to international standards. “Once the detailed project report is prepared, it will be sent to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for approval. The construction work will begin only after getting a green signal from the authority.” The official said the detailed project report was expected to be completed in the next two weeks.
