Ranchi: In a dramatic event straight out of a Bollywood potboiler showing chor-police hide-and-seek and fast car races, two men, driving an SUV, injured several people in the state capital and tried to mow down police teams several times before being arrested in the early hours of Tuesday. The high-speed chase, which began at Kutchery Chowk, lasted for over two hours before it ended with the arrest of the accused around 5:10 am from a hospital at Piska More.It all began around 3 am when the accused Ishtiyaq Ansari (25) and Gurfan Ansari (30), residents of the Nagri area of the city, had an altercation with a group of transgenders near Kutchery Chowk. The accused were allegedly consuming liquor with the transgenders when the altercation led to a brawl.
Meanwhile, Bunty Kumar, who was hanging out with a group of friends close by, heard the commotion and moved in to end the brawl. However, the duo thrashed him brutally and put him inside their car. Then, they ran their SUV over the legs of a transgender while escaping the scene. The transgender, who was critically injured, was admitted to a hospital later.“As the duo escaped the scene, a group of youth tried to stop the vehicle, but they ran the vehicle over that group too, injuring two of them. While they left one injured at the spot, another injured, they took another injured, identified as Bunty Kumar, in their car and fled towards Ratu,” SP (City) Paras Rana told TOI.When asked about the motive, Rana said the duo went on a rampage under the influence of alcohol. “Both were heavily drunk,” he said.As the vehicle left, Bunty’s friend and the transgenders dialled the police control room, providing details of the car and the duo. As a frantic police chase began, the SUV continued to create chaos across the state capital as Ishtiyaq and Gurfan cruised through Ring Road, Ratu Road, Kanke and several other areas.“They also escaped police barricading thrice and rammed Kotwali DSP Prakash Soy’s vehicle and escaped. The police team fired at the tyres of the four-wheeler to stop it near Mandar at around 5 am. During the firing, a bullet hit Ishtiyaq’s back,” Rana said.Following this, Gurfan took charge of the vehicle. He then drove to a private hospital near Piska More and tried to admit Ishtiyaq at a hospital. By then, a police team chasing the SUV closed in and arrested them at the hospital.“The wounded accused, Ishtiyaq, is currently undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, while friend Gurfan is in police custody. The injured are currently out of danger,” Rana said. Later in the day, a forensic team examined the car involved in the case on Tuesday at Kotwali police station.Notably, this is the second such incident in the city this year. On Jan 4, three men killed a man from Garhwa by running their four-wheeler over him in Lalpur.
