Dibrugarh: Hundreds of Congress workers took part in a massive rally in Margherita town of Tinsukia district on Tuesday, demanding stringent action against rampant drug menace plaguing the area and accusing local authorities of turning a blind eye to the crisis.Carrying placards with anti-drug messages and slogans demanding immediate police action, the protesters marched through the town highlighting what they described as the alarming prevalence of drugs in Margherita. The demonstration highlighted growing public concern over substance abuse affecting the area’s youth and students.“The young generation and students have fallen prey to the easy availability of drugs, from brown sugar and heroin to cocaine. This is destroying their future,” a Congress worker said.The protesters alleged that drug smugglers and peddlers operate with impunity in the town, making narcotics readily accessible to vulnerable populations, particularly students and young people. They demanded that law enforcement agencies take strict and immediate action to dismantle drug networks operating in the area.In a sharp political attack, Congress workers accused Margherita BJP MLA Bhaskar Sharma of failing to address the drug crisis in his constituency. “The BJP MLA from Margherita has turned a blind eye to the drug menace. While our youth are being destroyed, the elected representative remains silent and inactive,” protesters alleged.The Congress workers demanded increased police patrolling, stricter border surveillance to prevent drug smuggling, swift legal action against identified peddlers, and rehabilitation programs for affected youth.Margherita, located in Tinsukia district near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, has reportedly witnessed a surge in drug-related activities in recent years, raising concerns among parents, educators, and social activists.
