Krishnanagar (Nadia): A school teacher and social worker was arrested in Nadia following allegations that he sold his deceased mother’s eyes instead of donating them. The teacher, however, has denied the allegations stating that he was in possession of official documentation proving the corneas were legally donated to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. The arrest of Amir Chand Sheikh has sparked a controversy, with questions being raised over police action based solely on complaints from villagers allegedly involved in a land dispute with his family.
Villagers accused Sheikh of selling his mother’s eyes after her death, triggering tension in the Kotwali police station area. Police arrested him based on complaints from local residents.Sheikh denied the charges, and said, “I am being framed. Five to seven people from the neighbourhood have conspired against me out of jealousy. Their intention is to destroy my career.”According to police and local sources, a long-standing land dispute exists between Sheikh’s family and a section of villagers. After his mother died recently, Sheikh donated her eyes in accordance with her wishes. He contacted a registered voluntary organisation and completed the donation process following established medical procedures. The organisation confirmed that the donated corneas were sent to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, following all protocols. Proper receipts and documentation were issued, officials said.CMOH Ranjit Kumar Das said, “This is the standard procedure for eye donation. There is absolutely no question of selling eyes in this process.”Physician Utpal Bandyopadhyay commented, “Eye donation is a noble and socially significant act. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness and proper dissemination of information about such programmes, misconceptions spread easily among the public.”
