Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified around 120 garbage vulnerable points (GVP) for mass cleaning in a week’s time. Once cleared, these points will be turned into beautiful landscapes.BMC has asked its sanitary workforce to carry out the special cleaning drive. “We identified two such garbage-generating points in each ward to undertake mass cleaning and transform them into beautiful landscapes,” BMC additional commissioner Kailash Chandra Dash said.Cleanliness target units (CTU) or GVP are identified to transform into neighbourhood parks and hangout zones through beautification work. “First, the vacant spaces that turned into GVP will be cleaned up thoroughly and the beautification drive will begin thereafter. While the area becomes garbage-free instead of a dump yard, people will get a greener space in close vicinity,” Dash added.GVPs are identified based on a survey by field-level sanitation teams. BMC officials said they will also introduce a zero-waste school initiative in which it will be ensured that waste generated from schools is not littered.BMC now has two mechanical garbage suction machines (also called Jatayu), the first of its kind in Odisha, for mass cleaning. The machine can suck 273 cubic feet (100 kg) of waste per minute and can run for 10 hours at a stretch. During the special cleaning drive, this machine may also be used.“In mass cleaning, tractors and tippers will also be used for quick transportation of waste from GVP,” Dash added.BMC officials said they will also undertake a drive to remove papers pasted on walls. It will also clear weeds from the walls of flyovers and clean up dry leaves gathered under trees. “The sanitary inspectors were asked to prepare a compliance report to help the higher authority know if a particular GVP is cleaned. Photographs of GVP and post-cleaning will be taken and uploaded on the dedicated Swachhata web portal,” BMC officials said.
