Elon Musk has announced the launch of XChat, a new messaging feature under X (formerly Twitter) prioritising security and multi-functionality. In a post on his X account on Sunday, the Tesla and SpaceX founder said the feature will offer Bitcoin-like end-to-end encryption along with vanishing messages, file sharing, and voice/video calling.
XChat has already been made available for select paid users, featuring a four-digit passcode system for added security, according to technology and startup news platform tech crunch.
According to Musk, the messaging feature was built using Rust- a programming language with a focus on speed and security- and developed using an “whole new architecture”
The move aligns with Musk’s broader goal of transforming X into an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat- a one stop solution for all digital needs like messaging, social media, payments, subscriptions, utility bills, food deliveries, plane and train tickets, ride hailing and much more.
Since Musk’s takeover in 2022, X has been aggressively rolling out features and rebranding itself as a tech-forward platform offering features such as long-form video, creator monetisation, and encrypted DMs.
The new messaging feature will be a direct competition to other platforms like Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal and Facebook Messenger.
In a quote tweet, Musk also added that XChat will allow users to make voice and video calls without a phone number, across all platforms. With this functionality, XChat positions itself as a potential competitor to meeting platforms such as Zoom, Discord, and Google Meet.
