T’puram: State govt issued an order to ensure that NPR will not be implemented in Kerala under any circumstances as part of the new census. In 2019, state govt had ordered a halt to all steps to implement the National Population Register (NPR) along with the census in Kerala. LDF govt then stated that NPR will not be implemented in Kerala. The census process was not carried out due to Covid-19. Now there are rumours that the NPR may be conducted along with the census as the census process will resume across the country from next year. The order was issued in support of govt’s clear stand against the NPR. The order declares that all activities related to updating NPR in state were suspended from 20-12-2019. Kerala was the first assembly to pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Kerala govt had also filed a suit against central govt in Supreme Court, citing the unconstitutionality of CAA. The new order is a continuation of these positions.
