Guwahati: The Tai Ahom community across Guwahati joined the rest of the state on Saturday in celebrating the annual ‘Me-Dam-Me-Phi’ festival with religious and traditional fervour.Guwahati marked the festival with large scale cultural programmes, ritual observances and community gatherings as thousands from the Tai- Ahom community came together across multiple locations on Saturday. Ceremonial rituals were followed by traditional song and dance performances, drawing participation from elders, youths and families, reflecting a strong collective presence.
One of the major gathering took place at Notboma area of the city, where chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the festival, paying homage to ancestors as part of the ritual and interacted with the community members. As part of the celebrations, Sarma also unveiled a grand statue of Swargadeo Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha.“On the auspicious occasion of Me-Dam-Me-Phi, I extend my heartfelt greetings to the Tai-Ahom community and to all the people of Assam. Swargadeo Chaolung Sukaphaa laid the foundation of Tai-Ahom civilisation and ushered in a new chapter in the cultural life of Assam. This sacred festival reminds us of our rich heritage, ancestral values, and the spirit of unity and harmony,” he said.Taking to ‘X’, Sarma on Saturday stated, “Swargadeo Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha established one of the greatest kingdom of Bharatvarsha, a realm guided by consensus and rooted in the protection of heritage and identity. Today, on the sacred occasion of Me-Dam-Me-Phi, we dedicated his Bhavya Murti in the heart of Guwahati.”The festival, which centres on the worship of ancestors, saw a massive turnout of devotees at various venues, marked by ancient rituals and cultural showcases.
