Trinamool has sent a showcause notice to party MLA Madan Mitra over his controversial comment that the incident would not have happened had the law student taken a couple of friends with her to college. He has been asked to show cause for violating party rules and to reply in three days. Trinamool issued a statement that Mitra’s comments were made in his personal capacity.
Meanwhile, Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee almost rebelled against the leadership. He took to X and said, “I completely disagree with the post made by @AITCofficial on X. Are they indirectly supporting the leaders who are shielding these criminals? Mere academic statements won’t bring any real change unless immediate action is taken against those leaders directly responsible. What’s even more unfortunate is that some of the leaders who emerged after 2011 are themselves under question in such crimes. I also wish to clearly distance myself from those encouraging or protecting these criminals.” Kalyan and Madan were censured on Saturday night. The matter took a serious turn with Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra hitting out at party leaders’ remarks, saying “Misogyny cuts across party lines”.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar and other BJP leaders were detained in Lalbazar Police HQ for the whole night for protesting over the rape case. Majumdar said: “The incident is the tip of the iceberg. TMC students’ union leaders take advantage of the women when they approach for admission and other issues of the college admission process. As a professor, I know this.”
On Sunday evening, common people and political parties took out processions with torches. CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP and senior leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and CPI(M) supporters, Congress and BJP took out rallies across the city, demanding justice. The doctors, who led the RG Kar protest movement, also joined the rallies.
