New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut to appear physically before it on November 17 at 2 pm in a criminal contempt case over his remarks against CJI Surya Kant and the judiciary.
Journalist Nikhil Wagle, who has tendered an unconditional apology for his social media post targeting the CJI, was directed to appear virtually on the next date.
A bench of justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul Pancholi issued the directions while hearing a contempt petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), with the written consent of attorney general R Venkataramani, under section 15(1)(b) of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.
In a separate development, a petitioner challenging the appointments of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi has approached SC with records obtained under the Right to Information Act, alleging irregularities in the selection process.
