Kolkata: A migrant worker from North 24 Parganas, Sahida Fakir (38), whose name was deleted in SIR with an appeal pending before Appellate Tribunal, was picked up by Mumbai cops when she stepped out for groceries under ‘illegal Bangladeshi’ suspicion on July 19. Her husband moved Calcutta High Court pleading for an opportunity to produce all documents, including original electoral rolls dating back to 1952 to prove Sahida’s family and she are Indian nationals.Sahida’s husband, 38-year-old Jumman Fakir (38), resident of North 24 Parganas’ Swarupnagar approached the division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Aryak Dutt claiming that Sahida has been pushed into Bangladesh despite allegedly being an Indian citizen. The division bench on Oct 14 permitted “one opportunity” to Jumman and authorities to submit their affidavits by Nov 25 and the matter will be taken up for hearing on the next day.Though Sahida’s name was deleted in SIR and appeal is pending before the tribunal, Jumman’s name featured in the 2026 list. Names of Sahida’s parents, Aaminauddin Gazi and Majida Gazi, are in electoral records, particularly the 2002 SIR, he claimed. It was also shown that Sahida’s grandfather’s name was recorded in the 1952 electoral roll as well. Her husband pleaded to court to allow them to produce original electoral rolls and records of 1952, 1971 and 2002 along with official family tree and land records. In his petition, Jumman recalled the day Sahida was picked up from Mumbai. They were migrant labourers, residing nearly 2,000 kilometres away from home to earn their livelihood. On July 19, Sahida stepped out to buy groceries when she was allegedly picked up by CID’s Mumbai crime branch under the detection branch. When Jumman came to know of her detention, he rushed to the police station, where he was allegedly “assured” that his wife would be released after some verification. Later, he came to know that his wife had been pushed into Bangladesh on July 23.They have a son, whose birth certificate also recorded Sahida with the last name Fakir and as wife of Jumman, he pleaded, stating that it proves her relation to Jumman. She also has an Aadhaar card, a transfer certificate from Jamia Islamia Girls High Madrasah of Aug 11, 2008 and ration card. She is claimed to have been born in Bengal on Nov 23, 1988 and her birth was registered with Bithari Gram Panchayat’s pradhan on Oct 19, 1995.
