Agartala: Delhi Police on Thursday arrested social media influencer Amir Shokeen following widespread outrage over his alleged racial harassment of a tribal youth from Tripura in Delhi. The incident, which allegedly involved racial slurs, abusive language and inappropriate physical contact, occurred on Tuesday. A Tripura Police team led by DSP (Headquarters) Samudra Debbarma reached Delhi on Thursday evening to seek Shokeen’s transit remand to Agartala in connection with a case registered at New Capital Complex police station.Acting on the directive of CM Manik Saha, Tripura DGP Goduguluri Srinivasa Rao coordinated with his Delhi counterpart, following which police raided Shokeen’s residence in north Delhi. He was booked at Sadar bazaar police station and is expected to be produced before a local court. Tripura Police will seek his transit remand for further investigation. The arrest followed protests and demands for action from political parties, indigenous groups, students’ organisations and civil society bodies across the northeast. The controversy began after a video surfaced online, allegedly showing Shokeen referring to the youth as ‘Chinese’ and using derogatory expressions such as ‘chini chini’. Critics described the remarks as offensive, saying that it perpetuated harmful stereotypes about people from the northeast.Reportedly mispronunciation of Tripura’s name during the incident further fuelled public anger.Amid the backlash, Shokeen posted an apology video on social media, claiming the incident had been scripted. However, he again allegedly mispronounced Tripura’s name in the video.
