MUMBAI: With recurring technical glitches affecting the 101 emergency helpline operated through MTNL, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has introduced five alternative mobile numbers. The BMC announced the additional numbers on Wednesday. Citizens can call 9076333101, 9076333102, 9076333103, 9076333104 or 9076333105 to seek assistance during fires, building collapses, road accidents, tree falls, drowning incidents and other emergencies. The move comes amid concerns that technical faults and a shortage of manpower to carry out repairs could disrupt the 101 service, making it difficult for citizens to contact the fire brigade during emergencies. The fire brigade’s main control room receives more than 15,000 emergency calls annually. Its personnel respond not only to fires but also to building collapses, vehicle accidents, incidents involving people trapped by animals or birds, drowning cases in the sea and lakes, fallen trees and oil spills on roads. The BMC said the control room previously had no alternative to the 101 helpline. The number is also used for other telephone-related operations, which can be affected when the line remains continuously engaged during a major emergency. The additional mobile numbers are expected to provide backup communication channels and help prevent delays in emergency response. The Mumbai Fire Brigade operates 35 fire stations, 19 mini fire stations, 22 quick response vehicles and six regional command centres located at Byculla, Wadala, Marol, Borivli, Mankhurd and Vikhroli. Its main control room is located at Byculla. The civic body has urged citizens to use the alternative numbers whenever necessary to contact the fire brigade.
