Pune: The crime branch sleuths of Pune city police on Monday evening detained two people from the Karvenagar area in connection with the attempt to murder shipping company owner Rana Suryavanshi.Additional commissioner of police (crime) Tejaswi Satpute told TOI, “We received some leads in the case and tracked down the two suspects in the Karvenagar area. We have handed over the two men to the Pune Rural police for further legal action. We cannot comment on their role in the crime.”Superintendent of police, Pune, Sandeep Singh Gill said, “We are probing the case.”Two people attacked Rana, the owner of Rana Shipping Company, on the highway near Baramati airstrip around 7.30pm on Sunday despite having police protection. His friend, Laxmikant Mahadev Suryavanshi (42), a real estate agent from Indapur, lodged a complaint with Baramati taluka police on Tuesday afternoon.Rana is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the city. He suffered injuries to his right hand.Dr Mudit Saxena, group CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic, in a statement said, “The clinical team has successfully treated Rana Suryavanshi, but his condition is still critical. He has lost blood because of the nature of wounds and is taking time to recover. He will be under continuous observation of the critical care team for the next 48-72 hours. The Ruby Hall Clinic team of consultants are keeping a close eye on his recovery process.”A resident of Solapur, Rana runs his shipping company from offices in Pune city, Baramati, Mumbai and Goa. He owns a flat in a township in Hadapsar but rarely visits it.According to the FIR, Rana had called the complainant, Laxmikant, on Saturday and told him to look for an agricultural or MIDC plot for business purposes. Following this, Laxmikant identified three plots and sent their locations to Rana.The shipping firm owner visited Solapur on Sunday. Rana called Laxmikant before leaving Solapur and told him to show one of the plots.The FIR stated that Rana always travelled in a security convoy, including police and private bodyguards. “His convoy reached the Baramati area around 7.10pm on Sunday. Laxmikant and three of his friends greeted him at the spot. They decided to change the driver of Rana’s SUV. At that moment, two youngsters surfaced on a scooter,” the FIR stated.According to the FIR, both the scooter rider and the pillion were in hoodies and masks. The pillion rider told Rana that he was the latter’s “fan” and wanted to take a picture with the shipping firm owner. The pillion was also carrying a bouquet.“Rana told his constable bodyguard to click his photograph with the youngster and asked the latter to remove his mask. At this moment, the youth pulled out a pistol and pulled the trigger, but the firearm malfunctioned. Rana then hit on the youngster’s hand and the pistol fell on the road. The youth then pulled out a sharp weapon and assaulted Suryavanshi,” the FIR stated.The police bodyguard chased the assailant and nabbed him. The youth bit the bodyguard’s hand while he was being taken to the latter’s vehicle and fled into an agricultural field. The scooter rider also escaped.Solapur rural police on Sept 28 last year arrested four people for allegedly attempting to murder Rana. The suspects, travelling in an SUV and carrying a sword, fled after threatening the shipping firm owner when he was returning to Solapur from Akalkot with his three police guards.(With inputs from Steffy Thevar)
