Panaji: Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has become the first govt autonomous body and the first major port in India to secure a captive non-public network (CNPN) authorisation for a private 5G network. Authorisation for this purpose was granted by the department of telecommunications in Sept under the Telecommunication Act, 2023, for a period of 20 years.Chairperson of MPA, N Vinodkumar, said that the private 5G network will allow the port to eliminate reliance on commercial cellular networks, thereby ensuring complete data isolation and digital security for sensitive logistics and processes.MPA is now preparing an implementation plan to explore the use of private 5G technology across key operational areas, including smart port operations, automated logistics, and cargo tracking. Potential applications include real-time monitoring of all port activities and assets, drone-based surveillance, smart sensors and technology-enabled management of port infrastructure. The proposed network is expected to provide high-speed connectivity, low latency and reliable communication within the port area. A dedicated private network could support operational requirements in the port’s industrial environment while enabling greater control over network management and the handling of operational data, said port officials.MPA officials said that as part of the implementation of the private 5G network, MPA has hired a consultancy agency to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The port authority has also issued a request for information (RFI) to identify suitable system integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The process of conducting proof of concept (PoC) trials is under way, said port officials. The proposed network could also facilitate the integration of connected devices and digital systems for monitoring and managing maritime operations, said a senior MPA official. The initiative aligns with the Union ports ministry’s focus on digitisation, process optimisation and improving operational efficiency across the maritime sector.
