Nagpur: For the second consecutive time, Nagpur University (NU) has failed to hold its convocation as scheduled. The university’s academic calendar, issued at the beginning of the year, had earmarked Oct 11 for the degree-awarding ceremony, but the date passed without the event taking place.Sources said no confirmed date has been announced for the convocation covering the winter 2025 and summer 2026 examinations. The university had also failed to hold its convocation on time earlier, with the ceremony repeatedly postponed for administrative reasons and the absence of a full-time vice-chancellor. It was eventually held in Jan 2026.NU has three important dates on its annual calendar: Aug 4, its foundation day; April 30, the birth anniversary of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj, after whom the university is named; and Oct 11, his death anniversary.Sources said April is considered too late for the convocation, while August is generally too early, as the university is still processing examination results and revaluation applications. Oct is considered a more suitable window, allowing the examination cycle to progress before degrees are awarded. NU had accordingly scheduled the ceremony for Oct 11.The delay contrasts with Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), which holds its convocation on Sept 15 every year to pay tribute to Sir M Visvesvaraya, after whom the institute is named.NU officials, meanwhile, said convocation dates in the academic calendar were tentative and subject to approval from Governor’s office. Approval for the latest ceremony is still awaited, they said, adding that preparation of the merit list is underway. However, the academic calendar does not explicitly state that the Oct 11 date is subject to approval from Governor’s office.
