In a post on X, the DMK accused the Congress of hypocrisy, questioning how the party could demand the dissolution of governments formed through the SIR process while occupying cabinet berths alongside the TVK government in Tamil Nadu.
The DMK referred to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent remarks that illegal elections were being held in the country and that governments formed through the SIR process should be dissolved.
“If that is the case, is the Congress agreeing that the opportunistic beneficiary of this deeply flawed, BJP-designed electoral system in Tamil Nadu (the TVK) should also be dissolved?” the DMK asked in its post.
The party further questioned whether the Congress was suggesting that the Tamil Nadu chief minister’s position did not rest on the genuine mandate of the people but on alleged manipulation of electoral rolls through SIR.
The DMK also accused the TVK government of deploying police against civil rights activists who protested against the SIR process in Chennai. It alleged that the action was an attempt to appease the BJP leadership in Delhi.
The party highlighted that the police action against activists took place on the same day Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Chennai to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay over a cup of coffee.Questioning the Congress’s response to the alleged crackdown, the DMK said the party was demanding that the Constitution be protected at the national level while remaining part of the Tamil Nadu government.
The DMK also criticised the state Congress leadership for what it described as silence over the detention of activists by the state police.
