Silchar: Police shot a suspected drug trafficker in the leg after he allegedly attacked three personnel, snatched a service pistol and tried to escape in Sribhumi district on Monday night.The accused, identified as 32-year-old Bappi Namasudra, was admitted to Sribhumi Civil Hospital. The injured sub-inspector and two constables, who police said suffered bite wounds during the scuffle, are also receiving treatment.ASP (Sribhumi) Trinayan Bhuyan said Ratabari police intercepted Namasudra near Cheragi Eidgah at Nivia and seized 10,000 Yaba tablets from him.During interrogation, Namasudra allegedly told police that more contraband was stored elsewhere. A police team took him to the location for recovery, Bhuyan added.Police claimed that Namasudra attacked the personnel escorting him, bit them, snatched a service pistol and tried to flee. Police opened fire to stop him, and a bullet struck him in the leg, officials said.Bhuyan said the sub-inspector and two constables were taken to hospital for treatment.Police said an investigation was underway to trace the source and intended destination of the seized tablets and identify others allegedly linked to the trafficking network.
