Wardha: A team of specialists provided reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation support to 27 people affected by leprosy at a medical camp held at Wardha district hospital recently. The camp, led by Dr Anil Golhar, Professor Emeritus, included three nerve decompression surgeries and four minor procedures. The interventions were aimed at improving mobility, restoring function and preventing further nerve damage among patients with leprosy-related disabilities.A patient requiring a prosthetic limb will be provided a Jaipur Foot free of cost through the Saket Foundation. Other patients received customised therapeutic footwear through the Deputy Director of Health Services, along with specialised day-care treatment plans. The initiative was supported by civil surgeons and medical teams, including Dr Sushil Mankar, Dr Rahul Sakhare and Wardha civil surgeon Dr Rajsingh Pawar.Dr Golhar, who has spent nearly four decades performing free reconstructive procedures and has received the Saptarshi Award for his contribution, has highlighted the need to address the stigma surrounding leprosy alongside its medical complications.Although leprosy is treatable, misconceptions about its contagiousness and the assumption that it inevitably causes permanent disability continue to affect patients and those who have been cured.Medical experts said awareness campaigns, rehabilitation services and community support are essential to ensure people affected by leprosy can lead lives with dignity.
